Okay everyone,

As I said, my local Walmart's self checkout machines are the only machines I know of, that accept halves in my area, also, I have heard from different people on another coin forum that their self checkouts accept halves as well, while one person said their Walmart self checkouts did NOT accept halves. So everyone and anyone who can, GET SOME HALVES AND TRY THEM IN YOUR LOCAL Walmart'S SELF CHECKOUT, then report your experience!

P.S. Try halves at you other stores with self checkouts as well, and report back to this thread!

I would take the challenge but if my hubby found out...let's just say I would be in big trouble. Man loves his halves.

Fox, IMHO, paying in cash defeats/compromises the purpose of self checkouts, which are are supposed to be speedy (small number of items, cashless -- or feed in a $20 and get some change) So slap a credit/debit card in there. Leave cash payments (and checks) to tellers/cashiers and keep the coins in your pocket at self-checkouts. But hey, that's just me.

That said, I am curious to see what folks find out about this. There's another thread in this forum where people spend dollar coins and halves and are trying to spend $100k of them. There may already be some good intel there.

To HADES with the self checkout contraptions.

Chalk it up to me being a partial Luddite, older than my 25 years, but I much rather hand my money/plastic to someone and get the chance of a warm personal interaction there than be coldly watched as I operate a machine that I do it myself.

even where the self checkouts are, I go to the cashier.

Some checkout chicks are charming.
They say
"Hi!"
I say
"Five feet, eight and a half inches."

Auto checkout says (recorded voice)
"Cash or credit?"
I have no way of answering that. I can't speak back to it, just press a button.

Unfortunately the auto checkouts in Sydney accept 50 cent bits.
That means that I am not able to confuse them.
Perhaps I could try a clad U.S. half dollar.

I prefer self checkout. I can bag my items as I like and I'm faster than most cashiers--not to mention, you never get stuck behind that one woman with the squalling baby who wants to make exact change and is yakking on her phone while spilling her purse all over the counter. You people know the woman I'm talking about. She also has an alterego as a guy who can't figure out what he wants to buy off the impulse rack and stares blankly at you when you tell him he needs to swipe his card.

That said: In my area, the Fry's [Kroger/King Sooper/Fred Meyer] near my house does not take halves. The one up the street that I prefer because they sell Ramune and Pocky (Japanese soft drink and Japanese snack that's kind of like a chocolate-covered biscuit but in stick form, respectively, and also available in almond and strawberry flavours)? Takes 'em. And it's a corporate store. I think it just depends on the demographic--my parents go to the "ghetto" Fry's (poorly lit, poorly laid-out, no world foods section, no wine, no bistro, small deli, no bakery) and I go to the "snooty" Fry's (well-lit, aisles are in a natural progression, world foods is three full aisles plus a display of nothing but kosher, big wine section, you can grab something to nibble while you shop and also get fresh homemade bagels).

Oh, and Walmart has no self checkout.

Saturday I tried to feed 2$ bills into the kroger self checkout cash dispenser, it would not accept them.

Last week I paid with eisenhowers, and the week before we used half dollars, but that was with a cashier.

Wow, some people sure do put a lot of thought into the checkout process at retail stores.

I spend small Dollar coins in the self-checkout all the time. They're much faster to load than wrinkled $1 notes.

I have successfully used $2 notes in the Home Depot and Safeway machines. Haven't tried them in Kroger.

The NCR self-checkouts everyone uses around here (grocery stores, Home Depot, Wal-mart), their coin slot is not big enough to physically accept an Ike dollar, but a Half will fit. Put a Half into a grocery store/Home Depot NCR machine, it drops right through to the return bin. But I haven't tried Halves at Wal-mart yet...

I was under the impression that 50-cent coins are much more commonly used in Australia than in the U.S./Canada...

After testing several different stores, I can report that the newer, smaller, NCR self-checkouts (with the coin acceptor bucket below the scanner) accept half-dollars, and the older NCR self-checkouts (with the coin acceptor slot above and to the right of the scanner) do not.

DNA,

By "the coin acceptor bucket below the scanner" do you mean the coin acceptors that stick out like a lip and you drop all of your coins in, and they slide down into the machines? Because, thats what my local Walmart that accepts halves has.

And you say those are the new machines, while the ones where the coin acceptors are next to the bill acceptors are the old models? If so, thats great news, because maybe all stores will eventually have to get those machines that do not accept the half replaced with the machines that do accept the half, and then maybe they will circulate more as will $2 bills if someone could convince them to set up the machines to dispense halves and $2 bills as needed, just like any other denomination, then that might even spark the vending industry's interest and they might retool and halves and $2 bills may become as common as quarters and $1 bills. One can only hope, I guess.

Yes, those are the newer NCR machines. The Wal-mart nearest my house has six of the new machines (and two others that are credit-debit only), but the Home Depot nearest my house has the older machines.

One grocery store has both varieties of the NCR machines (two new, two old).

Our Walmarts have self checkout, but most of the time you get behind someone who thought it would be better to use self checkout than stand in line... but... they are so slow at doing it that they end up making a longer line at the self checkout!

Either that or the computer illiterate decide they want to try them.

On the same subject but a little variation! I used the Coinstar machine at my local Super Saver grocery store. If you accept a "Gift Card" there is no commission charged. What you put in you get paid for. Here's the weird part. It rejected my Kennedy 50 cent pieces, all 8 of them. Took the cent, nickle, dimes and Quarters OK but not the Kennedy's. I would not even try dollar coins. Anybody else ever get rejected by Coinstar? Going to try another machine in a day or so.
