It's listed in Shull's Guidebook to Confederate Currency as Criswell #3. It has a rarity rating of 4 (1500-2500 extant) and it looks like it has tape residue or tape at the corners probably from it being mounted on something. It's a fairly common note. The portrait is Mrs. Juliet Opie Hopkins, who was instrumental in providing hospital and medical care facilities for Southern troops during the Civil War. The book value listing is $15-40 depending on condition.

1500 extant and its rare? I find that a bit odd.

Where did anyone say it was rare? JimJumper described it as a fairly common note.

Lettow - I confess, I know nothing of US paper notes! The Rarity system I'm used to goes R1-R5 so R4 would be very rare.
I dont know how notes survive so long. Tucked into books?
Pretty cool to have such old paper. Books survive by virtue of their storage, paper notes have no such excuse. Interesting that states issued their own money at that point.

The Shull book has rarity listings of R1 (10,000+) to R11 (2-4 surviving). I've also seen (and use) the Garland ratings of R1 (1,000+) to R14 (2-4 surviving). I would assume that rating numbers can be made to fit whatever the author of the reference being used wants them to be.
