Can an uncirculated coin have bag marks? This dealer thinks it's ok and normal. My thought was brand new ,no marks. I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place or if I'm not suppose to put a link in.

Yes. This is why the MS scales goes down to 60.

The link is okay.

Yes. This is a MS-60 Morgan dollar, just for an example.

Yes, absolutely. The US Mint used to ship coins in canvas bags, cents were $50 face value up to silver dollars with a $1000 face value. All those nice new coins bang around against each other in those bags and even inside of the Mint, business strikes do not receive any special handling- dump 'em, count 'em, and ship 'em out.

I stand corrected. I thought uncirculated was untouched. That morgan took a beating.

This is why many, myself included, will argue that a nice AU coin can have much nicer eye appeal than a lower scale MS coin.

I agree with you 100% jbuck. I will take a lustrous AU over a low end (MS-60/61) any day.

Agreed completely. Some lower end MS coins can look like trash, and some high AU can look amazing.

My favorite grades are probably AU55 and AU58 right now. If you look for the right coins, the AU coins can look Uncirculated and you can get a great deal on them :)

I have a collection of Australian Canberra florins ( It's just a fetish of mine) and have about a dozen or so coins in the MS64-66 bracket.
I also have a lot of AU58 coins, If you held the high end MS coins and the good AU58 coins in the same hand you would swear that the AU58 looked just as good.
The Lupe and the USB gizmo will soon tell them apart but I agree that the high end AU coins can be absolutely stunning
MS 60 is NOT my favourite number

I am in the same camp:
A fantastic looking AU beats an ugly MS60+++.
Rest in Peace

I've got a few Morgans in AU condition only because it's almost impossible to find certain date/mm's with a decent strike that actually looks MS. I literally have the same appearance for a fraction of the price. I think many high AU Morgans spent a lot less time in the mint bags being tossed around and counted numerous times.
