I bought my first coin (1852 Large Cent) during a recent coin show. I found a really nice piece.

Now I want to add more including Half Cent, 2 cent, and 3 cent. Do I have to wait for the next coin show to find a good deal on a nice-looking coin?

I guess I'm wondering how many people are happy buying from ebay, Littleton, GovMint, or the other places? Do you often have buyer's regret since you can't judge the coin quality until you receive it?

Advice and experiences are appreciated!

Do your research on the denominations you are looking at, learn how to grade each one, learn what to look for problemwise (especially on the coppers) so that you don't buy a corroded or cleaned copper, and wait for the right coin to come along.

You will find the best deal on auction style listings on ebay if you know what to look for.

If you do not feel comfortable looking at pictures online then your best bet is to buy in person at you LCS or coin show.

dont pay retail if you dont have to
you want safe? buy slabbed off the bay
they'll still give you 14 days option

you want numismatic experience? handle as many as possible
don't be afraid to spend $3 to track returned shipping and then look at every time you spend $3 for returns off the bay as a lesson that cost you that amount...90% sellers offer 14 day no questions, and they live up to it...buy from only 100% feedback...if 99.5%, check why then decide

go for it
have fun

all of this disclosed as IMHO

I have purchased quite a few older coins from e-bay. I have sold some of them and kept some. After selling a few coins to my local coin shop I began to get a pretty good feel of what he would pay for certain types of coins in certain grades. I think the selling part is important to try out. Very easy to get carried away by buying a bunch of coins and not know what you might get for them come selling time. It is not easy however to buy a coin online and than try to sell it to a dealer and break even or make money. Most of the time I can make a few dollars if I am lucky. Jerry

Ive bought many of coins off ebay and have been very happy with the vast majority.

Just remember if it looks to good to be true it probably is. Stay away from ANYTHING coming out of China or that area as well.

The majority of eBayers are honest people and most coin stores sell on there as well. Theres always a few bad apples mixed in though like with everything in life.

I have found ebay almost always will have the best prices though and will give you the chance to view a ton of options for what youre looking for for the most part

1st- Do your homework on the coins that you like. ( such as Three Cent piece silvers are easily bent so look for that when you shop for them)

2nd- Read, Read, Read, Read I hope this is clear.

3rd- shop local coin shops I have found some really nice coins at shops near my house.

4th- Join a coin club.

5th- Join the pcgs collectors universe you can pick up some nice coins there and most people will take payments if funds are a problem. Also search and see if their is a collector club online for your coins. I know their is a seated coin collectors forum because I am a member but that does not help you any but check for your coins.

6th- Read, Read, Read, Read.

Two books I would get to help with learning how to grade are Photograde and ANA grading standards for U.S. Coins.

Some other books about coins your interested in Flynn, Kevin/The Authoritative Reference on Two Cent Coins
