All that I lack to complete my 7070 album is two Libery Seated dollars - motto and no motto. My standard for all the other coins I have obtained for my 7070 were VF-20 or better, but these old dollars are just too expensive for me. I am willing to spend between $200 and $300 each for a decent VG-8 coin without any problems like cleaning or holes, but I can't find any. The offerings on ebay are for the most part just awful - wire brushed, polished, dipped and they still go for graysheet bid or more. If a decent, uncleaned VG-8 comes along it is quickly bid up substantially above graysheet. Almost all the Buy It Now listings are by 'ernie' and represent his vastly overgraded and overpriced MO. Heritage auction listings are scarce and always represent damaged or cleaned coins in the lower circulated grades. Does anyone have any suggestions for a source for Liberty Seated dollars that are decent? I am really interested in completing this set.

Seated series is "heating up", toss your graysheet out, especially on problem free pieces. With this in mind "ernie's" offerings overgraded or not may be closer to current market values then one would think. If you are a real "stickler" on grading, these people are often accused of under grading, and they are STELLER people to deal with. You may want to place a want list with WARREN OR Jon . here is a link; http://www.rare-coins.com/

My first thoughts would be calling Jack Beymer or Brian Greer. I picked up a VG-F 1841 dollar in original condition about 5 years ago in a local shop for $165, but since then coins like this have become a lot harder to find. The last one I looked early this year was an 1846-O in F for $275, and while the toning was nice the obverse field was finely pinscratched.

Two points: 1--re ernie: I applaud you for not bidding on "ernie's" coins. Even if the prices are close, people who advertise their ANA membership should NOT overgrade their coins, and his overgrading is an insult to us all. I'm very glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. The more people who ignore his listings, the better off we all will be in the long run. 2--re seated liberties: In my opinion, the key to buying anything in the Seated series is patience. If you are doing ebay, you'll have to wait for the right piece--while avoiding all the Chinese counterfeits--and if you want to pay a reasonable price, you have to be prepared to be outbid a few times. I tend to advocate avoiding big auction houses as prices seem to get inflated because of the fact that "it's a Heritage sale." If you decide to bid, stick to your price and don't lose your head. Try a coin show if you can, and find the most personable dealer with the best prices on coins. Even if he doesn't have want you want at the moment, you can give him your want list. Whatever you do, try to have fun.

Thanks Thunder. Is ICG a decent grading company? I thought it was one of the less desirable slabs? The coin looks like it is about VF.

ICG is pretty good for older coins and I know that they do alot of slabbing of medals and ancients. Their grades on some modern stuff tends to be a bit "optimistic" IMO. I would rate them #4 after PCGS, NGC, and ANACS. Now the drop-off after #4 is pretty steep although PCI has made some big leadership and staff changes recently that could signal a rise of their reputation too.

ICG is considered by many to be the 4th best.... some would consider them the 3rd best TPG, (over ANACS). In threads in the TPG part of the forum they are generally considered to be a good company for authenticity and grading. I have no ICG slabs but I personally would have no problem buying one for a circulated coin. Hopefully others will respond with more thoughts.

From what I've seen, I'd trust ICG grades on older coins. I don't trust anybody's grades on the moderns. I think they ALL overgrade them. PCI is perfectly acceptable for authentication. In my opinion, they tend to overgrade. In your situation, I would look for a coin in a PCI slab so that you know it's authentic and grade the coin for myself and ignore the grade on the slab. PCI coins tend to be much cheaper than the top 4 and you will have the authentication.

Susan, I always grade my coins myself and not let the slabs do it for me. I am concerned about authentication. Do you think this ICG dollar might not be properly authenticated? Thanks.

I trust ICG completely with authentication. I was thinking of options if the ICG coin was more than you wanted to spend. For what it's worth, I agree with the grade assigned. Other than the top 4 and PCI, I wouldn't not feel comfortable with authentication from any other TPG.

Thank you Susan and all of you. I bit the bullet and bought the coin above in the ICG Holder. It is about $30 under retail, basically problem free and meets my type set standards of VF or better. One more to go and I can post some pictures of this album.
