ok basically I've been trying to get one of each type of coin and I wondering what to focus on next I'm considering getting one each of the flying eagle pennies or maybe starting a Barber quarter or half collection or maybe a walker collection. not entirely sure. Kind of looking for what would be easier to start and more cost effective.

It kind of depends on the budget and what type of collection youre trying to do with them. A lot of the series you can put together fairly cheaply except for the key dates. The Franklin halves is a pretty reasonable short series, the walkers arent bad except for the 1921 and 1921 d, the Barber quarters have 3 coins that will be VERY pricy. Jefferson nickels and Buffalo nickels are both very reasonable sets as well

Mystic2,

As you can see in my signature, I am partial to the Barber series.
If this is an area that you wish to explore, please look at our site and take advantage of what we have to offer.
While we do try to encourage people to join the organization, the information on our site is completely free to everyone.

Instead of going for an entire run of any of the series, you might start out with four dimes, quarters and halves.
One from each of the four mints: Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans and Denver. 12 coins in all. Throw in a few "V" nickels and you would have a nice sample of Barber's work.

Dimes are [ relatively ] easy. Quarters and Halves, in grades of fine and above, can be pricy. However, they are scarce, and if you find one and buy it, you will never be unhappy with it.

Walkers? A "short set" from 1940 to 1947 is quite popular. Many if not most can be found for bullion cost. A nice way to both collect coins and acquire silver at the same time.

SO many coins to choose from!

Good luck.

Well the flying egles are one of the easiest collections to assemble. There are only three coins, two if you aren't interested in varieties. And you don't need the 1856 to have a full set because it isn't a coin, it's a pattern. The problem with the set is it is too easy. Depending on your wallet and how high a grade you want, one show and the collection is complete.

Truthfully, it's up to you. You need to decide what you like. It's all about money. Try one of each type of coin for starters. Barber, Standing lady, flying eagle, Morgan, Peace, etc....
There is no end.... Just remember, keep focused on what you want and try not to spread out.

Mercury Dimes. Lots of them around so the prices are reasonable. Almost all are available and too within reason. Only a few really tuff ones. In many coin shows or coin shops, even at flea markets, most run about $2 to $4 each for the common ones. In almost any brand Album, they look impressive too.

There are two ways to go about this. if you are collecting as a collector or collecting for future profit. if you are collecting for collecting, and you are looking to collect one of each type then you are a type collector and I would stay away from pricey key coins in a series, select a grade, such as VF and then start looking for coins in each series in that grade in each series. this will give you a consistent collection so that coins don't look out of place. If you want to build a collection that will increase in value for possible resale in the future or retirement, then you may want to buy the best coin in a series that you can afford. look for keys and semi-keys. I wouldn't buy anything less than EF. this may take a little to complete because you will need to save for each one. but in the end you will have a collection that will return the most in the future. figure out how much you can spend each month and then decide on the type of collection you want to build. go to the PCGS prices guide online and you will get an idea of costs for each series in one glance. hope that helps. Happy collecting!
