Hi. I am trying to understand what were the first coins used by the colonies? When the colonists first came, was English Coinage used? When were the first US coins used? Between these two periods, what was used? I apologize for my ignorance but I can't find a single source to clear up this issue once and for all.

When the colonists did encounter coins, it was likely to be Spanish. Spain controlled virtually all of the silver and gold production in the new world and I think but might be wrong, a little under half of the world's silver supply. Under the period Mexico was a Spanish colony, Mexico city churned out hundreds of millions of pesos. Each peso was equal to 8 reales and the hundreds of millions of pesos was probably a mixture of the all the denominations minted. There were other mints like in Lima and Potosi and at certain points they could rival the high production rates in Mexico City.

The first Colonial coin actually struck in the United States was the NE shilling struck in 1652.

From my reading, the 8 Reale, or Pieces of Eight, were the first coins used in colonial America. I also believe that Condor is correct as to the first Colonial America produced or minted coin.
