I was at a local coin show this past weekend looking for some bust half dollar upgrades but came up empty. However I couldn't resist looking through some junk boxes and bought my first holed coin an 1822 Large Cent.

Do they get the elongation by heating and stretching the coin?

I may just keep this one on my home office desk.

The stretching is from the displacement of metal as the object they used to create the hole was forced through the metal.

Yes, this effect can be confirmed by drilling some more large cents. Avoid using 1793's, 1799's, etc.

Year ago, late 60s, I bought this for $0.25.
Made a cool necklace.

Yours. cipster, was done with more care than mine, and I, too, am curious what they sell for nowadays.

(Oh, the bathtub ring I left after coming home from the Woodstock Festival!)

I have one a lot like this, but instead of being worn smooth it's extremely scratched. The date is a barely-visible 1828.
