I seems that I read several years ago that Sac Dollars circulated well in Ecuador. Does anyone know of this article or is it an old wives tale?

Yes, Ecuador does use the Sac dollar coins and the US Dollar is their primary currency. Apparently one of the reasons why the coin is so well-liked down there is that Sacagawea, being Native American, is a more culturally familiar face than a dead white dude of European origin.

Thanks biokemis6. I actually remembered something correctly. I wonder if you can get some well worn ones there?

Yeah, from what I can tell tourists bring back lots of nicely circulated sacagaweas.

They also bring back counterfeit Sac dollars.

Makes you wonder where else you might find US coins circulating.

During the 80s, the Gov used Susan B. Anthony dollars in the Base exchanges and Clubs in Germany. I know some of those made it into the local economy. Most were purged or sent back to the GIs in the US occupied Kascerns.

Like Biokemist said, I read somewhere that most people there actually think that the coin depicts an Ecuadorian mountain woman.
