I have had this misaligned one dollar bill since the early 80s. It is in mint condition, never circulated. It was pulled out of a wrap of new one dollar bills. Can anyone tell me what this might be worth? I'm completely new to this and thank you!!

Hi PattyS, First, welcome and thanks for posting. Now for your "mint" error note. 1) I would not call it "mint". There are too many handling wrinkles for such a relatively recent series. 2) The error is not that uncommon for the series 1977A, but would be in the minor to moderate range of the error, probably closer to moderate as its 3rd print is off in 2 directions. That said, I feel there is a premium for your note. What premium, I am not sure. A suggestion is that you could look on ebay to see what they are going for now.

Thank you jim61. I mentioned mint because it has been in a plastic sleeve the moment I found it. The wrinkles are because the sleeve seems to be a bit smaller than the note. Does that make a difference?

Yes, PattyS, that does make a difference. Appearance counts for so much. Also, you want to be sure you are using archival quality Mylar currency sleeves. Some of the older ones were not and can cause problems with your note inside. You need a standard small size currency sleeve to prevent that buckling.

Hi Patty WELCOME TO CCF! Glad to see another person interested in currency. Although error notes are not my specialty, I checked through some Heritage auction archives for what a 1977A FRN $1 with a misalignment error similar to yours goes for. Found a few examples and I'd estimate that your note in the given condition (with a few creases but otherwise solid margins and no hard folds) should go for $35-$45. If you wanted to sell it, I'd recommend ebay for this note. With the recent trends in the U.S. currency collecting world, your note however might go for even more than my estimate as the market is quite strong right now. Best of luck!

to CCF. Very nice find. I suggest putting it in the pages of a book and then putting something heavy on top of the book and let it sit like that for awhile. Some of wrinkles will come out. Do not iron it. Then buy a new Mylar holder that fits it properly. John1

Thank you to Woodford and John1, I so appreciate all your suggestions. I did check on ebay, and found a couple of notes that had similar misalignments, but different years. The notes were running closer to $100, but would the year itself make a difference?

Yes, on some errors and some series.

Also Patty, make sure the notes you are looking at on ebay are auctions that have already ended and sold. This way you can observe what the actual market price for a note really is. Any seller can set a buy it now price of $100, doesn't mean that is what it is really worth.
