Although putting together a slabbed 7070 allows lots of flexibility (adding some of those forgotten types like Arrows and Rays, Type III SLQ's, Presidental Dollars, etc...), I have been after this commemorative type for the longest. I had a different one on lay-a-way but it was a raw one and...this one came around. What do you think NGC had to say about this one? Thanks for your interest! Edited by oih82w8 03/27/2013 2:32 pm

If you're going to get a commem to fill the final spot in the 7070, this is definitely the one! Beautiful piece!

And oh, I think NGC graded this somewhere in the AU50 area. I was kinda torn because some of the details is XF. I'm sure if it was slabbed by PCGS, it would be a XF45 coin.

I recall your interest in finding a nice Panama-Pacific half for this set ... congratulations on a fine addition. I'm assuming the visible scratch on the obverse ... from Ms. Liberty right arm to her head ... is on the holder and not on the coin. If so ... NCG XF45. Very pretty coin and a wonderful addition to your set. David

Winnah"! I'll give it the customary 24 hours for the grade reveal. The high resolution images show that as well...on the slab not the coin. I thought that I read somewhere that " Columbia" is on this coin not Liberty. Does anyone know? Or are they synonymous?

I have been meaning to put a thread together, with the Gov't furlough looming I may have a "day off a week" to actually do it. Probably a "denomination a day" kinda thread. The 7070 covers such a wide range of dates, where would one put this type of thread? Classic U.S. Coins?

Quote: I thought that I read somewhere that "Columbia" is on this coin not Liberty. Does anyone know? Or are they synonymous? The allegorical female figure on the Panama-Pacific half-dollar is correctly identified as Columbia, which is just one of the early personifications of the US; the names Columbia and Lady Liberty are often used interchangeably. While technically not 100% accurate â€" they are two distinct allegorical representations, with Columbia being in widespread use prior to Lady Liberty - they are both meant to personify freedom and represent the US. So, few have issue if either term is used. Also, I agree that the attractive coin you've presented falls in the XF/AU category. I would grade an XF, but NGC can sometimes be a bit "generous" with its commemorative grading (IMO).

Congratulations on the AU55 grade ... better than I have estimated and assume the coin in hand displays luster not apparent in your otherwise fine photos. I as well am looking forward to photos of your slabbed 7070 set .. whenever you can post them. David

Working on the Slabbed 7070 thread with a start date of 09 Apr 2013, kinda like a "days of" theme. Sneak peek; ...show this one denomination/section at a time according to the 7070 outline, with a few "extras" along the way;
09 April - Half Cents . . . 21 April - Birth Year (my birthday coincidentally) (no gold page)I think that it will be fun.
