The New Penny was 1971. Only 1.5 billion minted :).

Perfect , those are my favorite ! Despite the large number minted, those 1971 pennies are very hard to find , I have only come across 3 so far this year ! Well done on getting one

Really? Did they melt the majority? I have 10 from 1971, by far the most of any year. Not counting 1972 I am missing: 1978, 1980, 1982, 1990, 1991, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2005, and 2012-2014. Not really trying to complete the set but they are a neat by-product of coin roll hunting.

Looking through the pennies you are missing ,1982 pennies are the hardest to come across even over here and for some reason I rarely get 1978 pennies .....

Interestingly enough old early decimal pennies weren't melted , but many seem to have been "lost" over the years .....I sometimes wonder were they disappeared to ,which is why I am always fascinated to read that some are turning up in interesting places . I am amazed you have 10 1971 pennies ! That is awesome , are any of them still shiny ?

No, all of the 71's are brown. The UK New Pennies are just small enough that people can cram them into the paper Canadian Small Cent rolls.

Took a bit of a break but back at it again searching 89 rolls of pennies today. I know they're small cents, I just like calling them pennies. Older Canadian Finds were: 1936 (F-12), 1942, 1945, 1947, 1947ml, 1951, 1954, 1956, 1957(2), 1958(2), 1959(3). Found 5 wheat cents including a 1909 and a 1909vdb! Also found 5 2009 US cents, an American dime, and a 2008 Lincoln which appears to have been artifically toned a deep purple with blue highlights. Found a 1974 with a small clip, a nice condition 2006 magnetic no logo and 2 Barbados 1 cents (2005 and 2001).

I took a chance on some dimes last week. I found 3 silvers in $50 worth of rolls. 1947ml, 1956 and 1961. The rest of the bunch had nothing.

I'd like to say thanks to those of you who are reporting these stats. I've told myself, the next time I'm in Canada, I'm bringing home rolls to search. Getting a Canadian cent some 45 years ago when I was not yet a teenager helped spur me into this hobby. I still get a kick out of getting a Canadian coin in my change down here!

Went to bank today to check on pennies. No pennies were available, but they did have a nice MS 60+ 1959 silver dollar, which unfortunately had a small hole on the N in CANADA. They also has a 1983 specimen half.

Got 3 boxes of pennies and another $20 of pennies from my bank on Saturday. Opened the loose rolls, got a 1942 Canadian, 1945 wheaty and 4 2009 US pennies. Had a few in the 50's but don't recall exactly which ones at the moment.

I'm saving the boxes for now, I want to start recording the video and I need a better light set up. But I'm moving in 2.5 weeks so no point in getting it setup now and then taking it down in a week or so.

I did open the lid off one of the boxes and saw a really old looking roll, believe it had a George VI on the end if I recall correctly... So hopefully the rest in that roll are old as well.

Went through a bag of pennies today (=50 rolls). Didn't find anything worth writing home about. A 1985 UK One Penny, 4 wheat cents and a few Canadian cents from the 50's.

I showed it to my Dorm mate since he is Pakistani and he thought it was the coolest thing.

Had to dig this thread back up from page two.

Searched 80 rolls of pennies today with older Canadian finds being: 1940, 1941(2), 1943, 1944, 1945(2), 1949, 1950, 1952, 1953, 1955, 1956(2), 1959(2) and best of all a 1931 George V. Also mint state examples from 1960, and 1962. Found 5 wheat cents, a 2 Euro cent, and a 1998 UK new penny.

Almost forgot to mention, I found a dime and a whole roll of nickels.
