found this in my pocket change and was wondering if it was a clad error or not.

It looks like some type of stain; it's not a mint error.

Looks like someone took a match to it, just my thoughts, no expert.

I understand that at first glance, it appears to be a satin, but then upon further examination the silver and dark ring is in contrast to each other. If you look closely, there are areas of the stain that should be straight in regards to the silver ring, and would have been symmetrical to the silver ring if it had not been stamped over the dark ring area.

My thinking is that the planchet had the error before mint striking.

Looks like a stain to me. I don't know what you mean that certain portions of the stain "should be straight". A stain can be any shape at all, depending on what and how it was caused.

I would suggest looking at some other plating issues that have been confirmed and compare it to yours, this may help you.

Definitely not an error of any type, just a stain. The CuNi cladding is still quite visible under the stain while missing clad errors look quite different with visible copper from the core-

Is the area in question slightly raised? If so it is some kind of clear coat (glue, finger nail polish, whatever}.
