This came as part of a joblot, comments on whether it is a modern or contemporary fake (or just underweight) please.

I'd say contemporary fake. I've had a couple made of brass as they aren't rare.

Yours is nice though. I suspect it would fool most people. But the hair and .. what are those things behind the ear meant to be .. laurel berries? They give it away for me.

I have a few counterfeits of this era. The most common are shillings and half-crowns.
Generally, they are impressive to the eye, but it is the weight that gives them away.
I have seen them in brass and copper: these might have been rubbed with mercury to give them a silver appearance.
I have heard of them being made in tin, which might be silverfish when newly-struck.
I wonder what yours is made of ?
