Mintage is 106,884,000. If it had an "S" mint mark it would be proof. Its real and I think its one of those coins where its kinda rare and not rare at the same time. But definitely real though.

Your coin is definitely a business strike, not a proof.

By seeing an "S" on the coin then it is a proof. it will also be in the top grade a coin can be in, 70. so no circulation.

Type: Jefferson nickel
Year: 1971
Mint Mark: S
Face Value: 0.05 USD
Total Produced: 0
Silver Content: 0%
Numismatic Value: $784 to $1152
Value: As a rough estimate of this coins value you can assume this coin in poor condition will be valued at somewhere around $784, while one in "perfect" condition can bring $1152. This price does not reference any standard coin grading scale. So when we say poor, we mean worn more than would be expected from a coin in this age, and perfect meaning it looks "perfect" without flaw and possibly even certified. .
Additional Info: There are several instances of a non S 1971 Jefferson nickel Proof. If you are buying one make sure its legit or has been certified to avoid a rip off. Stats above are for the no S proof version of this coin

Go to a coin show or a coin shop and ask to see a proof 71 nickel, seeing the real coin is best thing than looking at pictures. And when you see one without the S mint mark, you would understand the value!

The nickel you are talking about is a 1971-S Proof error, it was made without the mint mark when it should have had the mint mark on it. That is why it is valued so high. Your nickel is not a Proof but is a business strike 1971 worth five cents.
