My grandmother had this 2010 penny in her change and I just don't understand is that rainbow tone or chemical damage?

I thought the coin was cool so I put it in a 2x2.

Perhaps, are the pictures much better?

Hi buddy. Thats what you would class as a type of plate tarnish. You see it a lot on UK coin sets from The Royal Mint that have been plated chemically.

Possibly the Mint is making our pennies with all those colors. Sort of like what they are doing to our bills. All those colors makes it difficult for counterfeiters to make our Pennies.
Or it's just normal toning. Either normal or man made.
Nice looking though.

I forgot to clean it off just to be safe.

Perhaps, she had a small jar full of pennies. About 200 there was.
I took like 10 nice ones, that was one of the ones. Anyway, I was looking over dimes too, 250 of them.
No silver or nothing worth anything.

@carl, lol funny but no. There was like 20 2010's with marks and scratches I didn't want, one was all black from outside I believe, was quite a shock to see that.

Okay well thanks guys. I'm still going to keep it. It's like how often do you find a penny like that. Anyway I should be getting a box of pennies if my bank has it. (on wednesday) I will be posting anything good I find. I will take all copper out as well. If there is a roll searching thread would someone please hint where? Otherwise I will make a new thread.

It's chemical tarnish buddy. Not a manufacturers trick, not heat, not washing it is purely a chemical tarnish. We see it all the time in the UK. Thats 100 percent guaranteed. The value of a coin (in the UK) is greatly enhanced by this.
