An interesting coin I would consider for a replacement in my 7070.

i think this coin would garner either a proof details or an UNC details
too many surface issues - scratches, gouges

i also dont trust the toning...its too smoothed into the surface and doesn't quite float and looks AT...meant to cover some of those hideous scratches

Screams AT to me. The toning is likely covering up imperfections that would be much more noticeable if the coin was blast white. Some scratches on the obverse and on the reverse below the you in 'United' there appears to be some kind of circular damage/scratch.

Don't know about the grade, price, or whether toning is real or artificial but that's a really beautiful coin.

That is one heckuva good coin, you must be keen to go the price for THAT sort of upgrade!
If you get it, examine it VERY closely, to make sure you have received good value for the money.

Normally at this level of investment, I like to examine the coin in hand before deciding to buy, despite even an excellent reputation of the seller, but that is just me.

The toning looks fine to me. There are many examples on Heritage display a similar shade and pattern to this one which I think was a result of the paper envelopes or tissue paper they were sold in. The toning around and inside the lettering, numerals, and stars but not on top looks consistent with natural toning.

The surfaces look really dinged up for a proof. Much of the deeper toning lies around more protected areas around the lettering and design while the toning in the more open parts of the fields is much lighter. The photos make it hard to tell but the dinged up surfaces and the patches of lighter and darker toning, I think are pointing towards a lightly circulated proof. I have a hard time seeing how storage in a coin cabinet could produce such marked up surfaces but have seen many times how the channels of commerce could. The lighter patches of toning can be cause by light wear since those areas are more exposed than the areas that are more deeply toned.

My guess it is priced a above FMV. At best it is either a PR-60/61 which is worth around $1700-1800 but if there are market unacceptable problems it could be worth only half the asking price.

Just the fact that he his holding it in his hand will keep me on bidding on such coin.

By the time he packs it, it could look a lot worse, and I won't be surprised if he ships it in a cheap plastic bag.

with D0ubl3Eagle. Toning looks okay, I'd guess it was been retoned in an old kraft envelope. THis coin will surely receive a details grade for one of three points, cleaning, scratched on reverse, or tooling. I think this coin is a proof that has been imparied, cleaned and maybe even worked over. A nice coin still but for the reasons I bring up will hold back the value in the marketplace. Somewhere in the $675-$850 range wholesale dealer to dealer, and around $875-$1100 retail priced. My opinion only of course. AU50 details.
