The owner (not my pictures) says this coin was identified by NGC as whizzed. I've only seen a few whizzed coins and they were easy to identify, but this is a bit puzzling to me. I see the variation in color, so is it the reverse near UNITED that is whizzed, or other areas? Does this reduce the coin's value significantly? Thanks in advance for any insights.... I'm not sure but the surface of the face looks different than the rest of the obverse.

The reverse especially does not look original. The bright white eagle's head, clouds, and stars certainly appear to have been messed with somehow. I wouldn't think whizzing necessarily (i.e., buffing with a high-speed rotating wire brush) but a Details grade seems appropriate.
Unfortunate for sure. The coin otherwise has details in high EF, almost AU territory.

I'm no expert, but I would say the reverse was certainly played with in the fields in several places. If it was whizzed or altered "just a little" it's still not original. Does it look nice in the photos? Sure. But when I look close at the 'ok' photos, I see issues on the reverse, and a lot of parallel lines from 10 o'clock down to 4 o'clock on the obverse in both the field and on Liberty.
I'd say NGC was probably correct. I'd also bet it doesn't look as good in hand.

The coin doesn't appear whizzed. Some areas look a little bright but I am not completely sure if lighting has anything to do with it. It may need an in hand examination to see what NGC saw.

Just an update on this auction. This was a 'no returns' auction and I didn't bid because of the uncertainty of how it might look in hand. The winning bid was $811 and the winner left positive feedback.
In addition to NGC saying it was whizzed it was graded as VF Details. Doesn't it look way better than VF?

Henry . . . I would say closer to XF going by PCGS photograde but then what do I know. When I compare their XF40 and 45 the 40 looks better to me. Here's a link to when I posted my 1807 which the grading forum was split between VF20 and 25. The one you posted is a lot better than mine. https://goccf.com/t/103311&whichpage=1Jeff
