Better than the crude souvenir copies that turn up on the Forum. There are only about four 1788 reverses without a period after MASSACHUSETTS, and this eagle doesn't seem to match any of them. I believe I found a coin that matches this one on the Heritage Auctions site, though, listed as an "unknown copy."

It is with nearly 100% certainty that you have a copy. The date for starters, is incorrect in it's diagnostics. The indian, albeit pretty good, also has incorrect design elements, especially the head.

And here it is again! Interestingly, this one is a grainy, mushy-featured specimen, described as an "electrotype" by forgerynetwork.com, but the Indian's skirts, the eagle's legs, claws, and wing feathers, and the olive branch, all conform exactly to pdm12772's coin and to the Heritage specimen. But why would someone make an electrotype of a coin that isn't even a genuine specimen in the first place? This counterfeit must have a very interesting history!

This sure is a choice copy! Nice catch on the die match there, Philadelphian! I've not seen these before. Very interesting study pieces ...

As to the question of why would someone make an electrotype of a "coin" that isn't genuine ... It may be to highlight the beauty of this piece, due to the perceived value or both, methinks. That Heritage specimen fetched $276. Of course, it had the provenance going for it. Then too, perhaps, this specimen was made by someone simply honing their skills on a popular design?

Can one of these be graded?

Well, the TPG's may argue differently, but you can grade anything, as long as you have other examples to compare it to.

And ExoGuy, I think you have seen one of these before! Remember this thread of yours from yesteryear...

Hey Philadelphian, I'll have to plead senility on this variety! That is the same variety about which I'd posted a thread. Now, I have to wonder how many more of these will be cropping up in the marketplace, given the prices that they're fetching.
