Since I'm relatively new to collecting (5 purchases so far), I decided to build a folder to track each coin purchase for future reference. I purchased a 2" three-ring binder. As I purchased a coin, I print out a sheet that contains: 1. Good picture of the coin 2. Date purchased 3. Location purchased (mint, coin show, etc) 4. Coin cost, shipping, taxes, total cost 5. Mintage 6. Country of currency 7. Composition 8. Any other notes of interest I love my coins but I also like having a record of the original costs/prices. I think it will be interesting to look at it in 5, 10, or 30 years to see how prices have changed. Does anyone else do this or I'm a bit crazy?

I have been keeping track of my purchases since I re-started my collections at the end of 2009. Before that I my collecting was on hold for 20 or more years. From your list, I only keep track of # 2, 3, & 4 in a spreadsheet.
EDIT - I also keep track of what I sell, buy, trade, give to, and get from CCF members

I like it, if you can keep it up great idea. I keep track of the more expensive stuff I get in this manner. And at least write the price on the 2x2 cardboard on cheaper stuff. Might be a little harder to keep track if you buy rolls of stuff to fill a big album though :)

Absolutely. Keeping records of your purchases is a great thing to do. I purchased a copy of the Coins Plus 2012 coin collecting software that I use to log my purchases. It allows me to save all the information about the coins, and save pictures. Having it on my computer saves having to kill more trees...

Hey FG!
No you aren't crazy,,, I like how you are sorting things.
What I have done is, as an example,,, everything I purchase from the US Mint,,, I keep everything, the box, the receipt, any catalogs they sent inside, etc.
In my email, I made a folder for any purchases I make online and put them in a folder where they will be stored there forever. Any other purchase I make, I stick the paper with the roll or packet and its locked away together with it.
nice job with your system!

I keep a file of all my purchases along with the original receipts. These are necessary for both security and taxes. Ex: If you by a coin for $1000 and sell it the next year for $2000, Mr Taxman is going to tax you for $2000 income from the sale. If you have the receipt, he will only tax you on $1000 capital gains. Plus, when my kids drive me to an early grave, at least they have a file to tell them what my collection is worth, when they go to sell it off

I also do have binders with pages of description for my coins, but only for the favorite crowns. Then I research for an important event that happened on the year of the coin, either global or in country of the coin, and add that too in the binder, great for historical reference

I used Bento (Macintosh base) to keep track of my larger purchases and important possessions, it is a personal database which allows me change the design and color whichever I liked. I can also view and print in spreadsheet mode.

Sounds very sensible! I keep five sets of records!
Firstly, photographs of my coins, labelled with when, how much and from whom I bought them. Second, the original paperwork/invoices, mostly for insurance purposes. Third I write details about the coin on little paper disks ('tickets') I keep with the coin (together with previous collector's tickets, if there are any). Fourth, where a coin has provenance (collector history) I try to keep photos of old auction listings, publication photos and other info in a computer file. And finally I keep a spreadsheet of my spending (actually two, one cumulative, showing how much I have spent, the other working down from the lump sum I started the collection with, telling me how much I have left to spend!)

I'm generic. I just use Coinmanage software because I'm too lazy for all the writing.

I like that Bento and will have to look at that for my iPad. I'm going to look into that... thanks!
