Looks to me as if it is a Saudi Arabian 1 ryal piece (Assuming its silver) Date AH 1354 (AD 1935) Photos should be oriented so that the swords and the arabic "1" are at the bottom.

I still have a few remaining questions:

1) Are their any opinions out their on the grade of this coin?

2) Since it appears that the darkened area is some type of burnt mark or equivalent, what can be used to remove this spot if acetone didn't do the trick?

I realize that an improvement from VG to VF is no big deal money-wise for this particular coin but an increase from a VG to a VF for a Saudi Arabian Ghirsh (KM# 30), for example, could mean a difference of as much as $ 100 more or so.

Because I still lack the knowledge on how to properly grade this country's coins any assistance on this featured Riyal would be greatly appreciated.

3) Finally, please provide a trusted URL to use as a guide in grading these type of coins.

mdpmedia.

Hi

Being the worlds worst grader(IMHO) I can venture a guess: there seems to be a lot of detail present on the coin so its grade is higher than VG From the photos you have posted there's no way I could say if the coin is higher than XF.

In researching damage to another coin I took a blow torch to a silver coin to see exactly what heat damage looks like. At no point did the coin I heated look like yours. I don't think it is heat damage may be chemical damage. As a first step try soaking it in Acetone( it won't hurt) although I suspect that may have little effect. The only way I know that you could get rid of the mark is to use a sacrificial plate (years ago one product was called Polivit plate) the techniques involve house hold soda dissolved in water as an electrolyte the plate is placed in the the liquid and you submerge the coin in the solution ensuring that it touch's the plate within a few seconds the coin will be bright and shiny ( all the oxides will have been converted back to silver while a small amount of metal in the plate will have been sacrificially corroded) If it isn't cleaned up by that method then there is little else you can do. When finished You must then rinse the coin well in water and then give it a soak in acetone. I really don't know if its a good technique for coins..... but unlike other methods it doesn't add a silver coat and it doesn't involve any rubbing

Sorry but I don't believe there is any online grading guide for Saudi Coins

These are tricky to grade, because all of the relief detail is of the same height.
Often happens like this with coins bearing Arabic inscription only.
Any wear that is of a scuffing nature is evenly spread over the inscriptional detail.

Having made this comment, it then becomes necessary to examine the inscription closely with a loupe, in much the same way that you would look for breakage in rays on U.S. coins.

Exceptional picture quality is needed to do a good grading by others on line, via pictures.
That is a pity because as it is, I offer my commendation for the pictures already submitted.

Under the circumstances at least EF, despite the lack of lustre displayed here, that these coins can offer in this condition.
