Hello all, I have an issue and it's driving me crazy. Closed my business (dental lab) and was turning in all my scrap to the refiners, also figured it was time to take the silver - quarters dimes etc ... I had pretty much gone through the coins but ended up bringing a few silver half's and dollars. This is where it gets odd fast, the guy looking through the coins says- "do you know what you brought in?" I replied "I thought so.
Anyway he shows me a coin I was sure I didn't even have, 1879 Morgan dollar with a CC on the back. These coins have been in the family for three generations ... he inspects the CC and says that's odd says it might be a fake hmm these coins haven't gone anyplace in 30 years or more, the CC on the back looks exactly like the Carson City Trade dollar and it looks like a VAM CAPPED but no evidence of a double strike but it has that tall looking CC. So to sum up, been in the family for generations (heard fakes started showing up within 25 years) not magnetic and the refiner analyzed it and it has the proper content and weight of a period coin. Going to try to upload a picture- taken with my cell phone. yikes too huge.

To the CCF!

Is there a question somewhere in your post?

There are Morgan experts here (I am not one).

Full pics of the obverse and reverse will be needed.

Sorry it was kind of buried in thee " ... he inspects the CC and says that's odd says it might be a fake"
The refiner thought it might be fake, I don't think it is.
I'll be getting better images of both sides posted.
Thanks

Love those morgans.

Coin is a real silver dollar in all likely hood. Sometimes the mintmarks are altered but your coin looks pretty worn and I think mostly AU-BU coins are altered in this way.

Thats kind of a biggy to miss in your search, hope you didnt scrap an 1889 CC Morgan also.

I'm bothered by the orientation of the mint mark. That "staggered" configuration, with the second C noticeably lower than the first, is characteristic only of the VAM-3/3A "Capped" variety, as the OP noted. If so, it's an immediate red flag because the die chips around the mint mark should be visible even in the small image, and they're not.

With that said, the original image is a tad small to be sure. Given the increased chance of misinterpretation/distortion caused by such small images, this mint mark could also be that of the VAM-2 series. Indeed, the die crack through DOLLAR brings VAM-2 to mind. That would be my "gut feeling" attribution of this coin as a result.
