Just a quick question about the coins dealers in Canada. Which one are your favorite and you think is the best in term of service, prices and avalaibily of the stock you order from them. Also, which one is the best for older coins. Thanks.

There are a few other threads discussing this topic. :-) colonialacres.com is always mentioned and the one I use the most. jandm.com is another possibility although not as highly rated by some and the website isn't always up to date as to what's in stock. Gatewest is good for recent releases. There are many more.

I have purchased from both Gatewest and Colonial Acres without any problems from either of them. Based on my experience I would say they were both equally good in terms of service and availability of the items I ordered.

I've bought at albern, colonial, j&m. No issues with any of them. I found albern had the quickest shipping.

Bought mainly from Colonial Acres, did couple purchases from GW - with both had no issues. Found that over a phone better to speak with GW - they sound like a professionals and always directly answered about the items in/out of stock. Also like CC&C and the reason is - possibility to "come and see". It is 30 km from me, it doesn't metter for the new releases, but if I want to by something from the previous years - it is nice to see the coin first. Another good experience - not once I found there "rare" or "overpriced" on ebay items for very good price.

Do any of you still prefer the physical stores for coin dealers instead of online? I tend to buy from a local coin dealer in my town so I can save on shipping costs

All three: CC&C, CA and GW (I think too) have a frontstore.
If you can visit the store by yourself - it better. But for ordering new NCLT products - the online purchase will be quicker, and yes, shipping charge (it not really significant 6.80-12.00) will be applied.

Anyone ever use Potomac Supplies (part of Maryland Stamps & Coins)? I just placed an order last week for a bunch of coin capsules, paid for it (plus the $8 shipping)... and now I received an email from them saying that shipping is $9 more. Anyone have this happen? Seems weird that they wouldn't have all their shipping fees upfront... asking me to pay more after the order was placed and paid for.

 Matter of principle.

Thanks for the input, that is the first thing I thought too. I am sending them a reply, stating that I won't be paying the extra fees. It is up to them to pay the extra shipping if they still want my business.

my problem with dealers isn't that they don't have it there (I understand it's business), but the fact some of them just out right lie about availability.
Don't tell me you don't have it, and then sell them at 2x the price don't tell me you have to limit my order AFTER I place it only to find out you are then selling it at 2x the price.
I'm not going to name names here, but a little honesty is all we ask for. I don't care if you want to sell at above issue price, just come right out with it.

If I have I choice I go local or directly from the RCMAlbern = GW and both are better in person than over the phone I found. Their online catalogue is not as organized as JM and the more unique coins are only available if you call in specifically asking for them or show up in person to view their display. JM in person depends on who is there. Over the phone is horrible for bullion purchases and mediocre for ordering other coins. Unfortunately the sales I've ever spoke to there do not know what they are talking about and the 4-5 times I've ordered from them processing was painfully slow. More than once I was shipped the coins without their boxes or coins extremely over-graded. Colonial Acres have been and excellent experience to deal with. On on occasion my wife and I made separate order within a day of each other (under the same name) and CA refunded the duplicate shipping cost without prompt. Very honest dealer. CCAC is a bit overpriced for their NCLT I find. There are a couple of very good sales there but also a few with their noses pointed in the air. When dressed in my sunday's best visiting their storefront is a blast. They do occasionally sell older NCLT that they bought at melt for very good prices and have unique selection of world coins. The best dealer is a local one though.

So Potomac Supplies decided to cancel the order. Keep that in mind everyone if you are ever thinking of ordering from Potomac, they charge you extra for shipping after you have already paid, then cancel your order if you don't cough up the extra cash!

The best dealer is NOT always local. Especially in Saskatoon. Sceptre coins is absolutely brutal. Went there about 5 years ago as a new collector to ask a few questions. He started talking that knowledge was selfish and talked down to me. 5 years later I sold a 12 year old a few rolls of 2012 pennies and gave him one of my old Charlton catalogues. They went there and he was spewing the same crap. There was a place called HUB CITY collectibles but rent got to high in his store front. The manager and staff were awesome. The even gave out half dollars for change. I think he still works out of his house. I miss that place. For online I like JandM coins. If you miss a release from the mint you can give them a call before they have it listed on their site and get most items for list price. But I like the layout of GW and CA sites better as I find it easier to find exactly what I want. I have bought from all and Talisman in the US as well. Never an issue with any of them.
