Is there some free software or something to keep track of this? I want to keep a record of purchases and prices paid, something I have neglected and still count on memory.

The best free way to do it would be to create an excel spreadhseet. I use Coin Manage 2007 and love it. You can add all pricing and information for every puchase, 4 photos, notes, etc. There is a section for all info you can think of actually, from who you bought it from, to the grading service, serial numbers, barcodes. Bottom line, I like it, and I'm not even close to using its full potential.

www.numismaster.com - you can keep track of your inventory through a free account on the website. (Of course, they want you to subscribe to their catalogs, too.) They used to have a spreadsheet that you could download and populate before uploading again, but I don't see it now that they've changed the website. The only way I see is to enter them one by one. I've emailed them about this today, so it's too early to expect a response.

Thanks Bruce,
You always have kind words with your posts and I appreciate it. Also I'm always looking to refine the file so I'm open to any ideas or opinions people have. I toyed with the idea of an access database but not everyone has access so excel fits the bill.

Thanks everyone for responding, it looks like nothing's free. I probably will try to just list them on notepad, as these excel and spreadsheets are beyond my limited knowledge. ( I have many programs on my hard drive )....such as Office which I have no idea what that is used for. . After that doesn't work out, I will use Bobbys link. Yeah Ken, CT. is great...um the coins here are as good as anywhere. Maybe we could meet sometime, at the New Haven shows. I never been there but want to try it. I been pretty friendly with a coin dealer from N.H. who I always see at Meriden shows. The only one I go to,so far. He is always glad to see me, but I dont know why was real glad on Sat. As to inventory, I think I may wait longer, cause I bought a nice photo scanner, for transparencys and have a lot to do. I figured out why the going rate for these are over a dollar apiece. Takes a lot of time. I sure cant make money buying coins, but maybe I could do this.

If it helps Sandpaper, there are probably numerous links online to find "how to" documents on using Excel. It is a great program, and is easily used. If you don't start writing equations and such, which you will really not have to do unless you want "totals", it is just a "grid" for typing in information to keep things in columns. it may look intimidating, but you can start plugging in info in 2 minutes if you want to. Just open up a blank doucument and click on a box and type away.
If you don't mind spending the money, I do highly recommend Coin Manage though.

Coin Manage sounds pretty good. What's the advantage of Coin Manage over Excel spread sheet?

IMO, sheer laziness. I just didn't take the time to create a spreadsheet is all. The one thing that Coin Manage has over a spread sheet honestly is pricing. It has default values listed for each coin, usually by all grades. You will not see DCAM on there that I have seen, but they have all levels. It makes it really nice to keep track. I think it says it goes by PCGS pricing, but I don't think it is by the over inflated pricing you find online. Bryan has been using this software for quite a while, so he may be able to give you more info. I do have it though, and it's very user friendly. You would probably need to go out to double letters (aa) to get the amount of columns equal to Coin Manage info offered....

New Haven coin show sounds good. I've never been to it as I used to go to West Haven but that one seems to be dieing a slow death so I've been wanting to check out the New Haven & Meriden shows. PM me whenever if you feel like going.

sandpaper - you mentioned that you have "office" - if that is Word Perfect Office 11, you can pull it up, click on Quatro Pro, and create your own spread sheet - similar to Excel.

Excel spreadsheets are one way to go. I ended up creating a simple FileMaker Pro database that stores all the info I need, including purchase price. I'm happy to share it with anyone who wants it, but you have to pay for FileMaker Pro itself
