I know this is not a error and don't believe die scratches would qualify as a variety of some sort (other than a marker for varieties of some VAMs), but thought it belonged in this forum.

This 1988 LMC is the first coin I have ever come across that has atleast a thousand die scratches on both the obv. & rev. dies ~ [11 photos posted].

All the scratches are raised on the coin [even on Lincoln], and why the Mint would wire brush these 2 dies this much is anyones guess.

At first I thought the dies may have clashed and they were trying to remove the clashes, but there is no sign of any clashes on the coin. (die rust ?)

Advise if this is a keeper or should be sent free.

I love the 88s. There are tons of them that were struck with severely scratched dies. They're worth keeping only if you're interested in them. Imo they're not worth anything reasonable above fv.

The dies are polished to remove die clashes. The die scratches continue on a coin and eventually flatten or get new die scratches to cover another clash event. They are common. You might save it to show to new collectors and the explanation on why it looks this way. Premium. It's worth what it says on the back. IMOHO

I was going to offer it to anyone that wanted to send me a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope where I could just drop it in a envelope & mail it back.

It may not be worth the 2 stamps needed, but will set it aside just in case.

What about giving it to a 12 Yd. to get them started in coin collecting?
