I'm new to this forum (or any forum for that matter!), but I really can't find any information on this topic anywhere. I've recently added several Shipov Russian Imperial banknotes to my collection. However, I've learned that the Imperial design was issued not only by the Imperial government but by the Provisional and early Soviet State governments as well. From the bits of info I could find, it sounds like the length of the serial number and maybe the cashier signature might be clues to which government actually issued the note, but I would really appreciate some help in how to identify and distinguish them.

The only imperial issues that were reused by the Provisional and Soviet governments were the 5 Ruble 1909 and the 1 Ruble 1898 (serial # like AA 123456 is imperial, serial # like AA-123 is provisional gov't). But, some other regional governments used old imperial designs during the civil war such as this West Army note that is obviously based on the 1899 50 ruble http://www.banknote.ws/COLLECTION/c...RUSS0230.htm
