Just imagine, someone in 1887 could have bought some groceries at the store with these. Edited by marcusm16a4 04/06/2013 1:55 pm

Awesome... It's crazy to think about what a dollar buys and used to buy. Example, adjusted for inflation, Gone With the Wind is STILL the number one most grossing film ever ($1,626,459,200 - adjusted). At five cents for the matinee or ten cents for the evening show, that's a mountain of mostly Buffalo nickles! I love watching old westerns too and every time I see a cowboy plunk down a dollar to for whiskey or pulls their poker winnings towards them I think about all the trade and Morgan dollars rolling around back then!

just curious .... the fractional currency notes were printed from 1862 to 1876. Roughly how much longer did they remain in circulation?

Correct mw if I'm wrong, but I don't think any US currency has been demonetized. It's like asking, "When did Buffalo nickels go out of circulation?" They're still out there, and I think this bill is still legal tender for ten cents.

Believe it or not the Treasury was still receiving fractional currency as late as 1934.
