I was just thinking, is there a practical reason why coins have dates on them?

Practically speaking its great for collectors and the mints do have an interest in having people collect their coins. Not only does it drive collector coin sales but they make money on some of them so if someone puts a quarter in an album theyre more than happy to make a replacement

To fill the date holes in Dansco Albums ?

Tradition, to help control mintages, removing older issues, among a few reasons

Without dates on coins:
No reason for most coin books.
No reason for Coin Albums and Folders.
No reason for people to wait for a new coin to come out.
No reason for many coin forums and web sites.
Nothing to put in that space on coins.
I've sort of wondered waht if the auto industry stopped dating when a car was made.

Control of the money supply, I suppose. Recently some British coins started being minted cupro-nickel plated steel instead of just cupro-nickel. These new coins are slightly thicker to ensure they're still the same weight but the difference is subtle. It's much easier to just check the date and then remove the ones minted before a certain year.
