I found this locally. sellers pics, something looks off to me. Especially the date, and the reverse leaves, but I am no expert. what do the CCF members think? It's being offered for $65. A bargain if real.

The date does look a bit weird, mostly the lower part of the '7'. Color might also be wrong. I'm not an expert on those, but it doesn't look real to me.

Quote: If its too good to be true it probably is. This is true, but this perception won't ever allow you to buy any bargains. If I was comfortable about my ability to spot fake 20 cents, and I'd believe it's true, I'd be a buyer for this one. There are bargains out there. Usually comes from sellers without knowledge about their coins. Yes, most of these are faking it, but some are not. You can find plenty of under priced coins if you search long enough.

Quote: You can find plenty of under priced coins if you search long enough. You can find under priced coins though this one seems to be really underpriced and is already a known target of counterfitting. Granted this ones a little more worn but the cheapest one to sell on ebay in a while was over 200 bucks. If it was an auction that just didnt do well or a proof eagle being sold as bullion Id say go for it. I may miss out on some things being overly cautious but I also hopefully wont get taken on anything either. Theres certain things I just wont touch that seem too good to be true and this series falls in that category for me. Granted at that price its not a huge risk so it would be tempting. If it was from a seller I trusted and have dealt with before Id probably go for it, if it was a craigslist ad or someone I've never dealt with Id stay away. Id also walk away from it if I had any doubt

I agree, it's tempting but the coin does not look right. The date does not match up with any I have looked at. In this grade I would also expect some letters in liberty showing. the pictures are all I have to go on, but I was not interested in buying the coin...I was just curious if there was anything sticking out like a sore thumb. Searching ebay you don't see many 1876P come up for auction, and like you said they go for over 200 and more. I tried searching for some examples of counterfeits to compare but I have come up with nothing.

The wear rubs me the wrong was as well no pun intended. Some spots look real worn while others have a lot of their detail. I cant say for sure that couldnt have happened naturally but it is unusual. Between that and the massive price drop from where it should be selling if someone said I had to give an opinion on it either real or fake id go with fake. I tried to compare it to some of the graded ones on ebay and didnt see anything that just jumped out and screamed fake so at the very least it appears to be a decent copy

With as low as the mintage is on this coin I think it is not likely that they used more than one obv die and the date position on this piece does not match of a known genuine coin. Does anyone know if they used more than one obv die? OK Breen does say two pair of dies. I've found an example of the other obv die now. The 7 on the OP coin looks like it may not be right. The 6 looks interesting but with the image shot at a slight angle an low resolution I can't really blow it up to do a good comparison.

This coin was on CL..now its taken down and replaced with a $400. price tag and no pictures. hmmmm, wonder if they saw the topic. I did a search yesterday on google after posting about the 1876 and this topic came up first. here is the ad now, guess we will never know... 1876 Twenty Cent seated liberty - $400 (Nh) Great coin, only 15,000 produced Email me for pictures @Conder101, I suspect the coin is counterfeit. The 6 in the date hugs the 7..and the 8 also looks off from the ones I have researched.

I don't like it. Details look very mushy. There appears to be several lumps of metal on Miss Liberty. The most visible being the one next to the shield. Personally even at the "bargain" price of $65, I would pass.

This is a counterfeit.
Red flags (to be taken as a unit):
1) Very strong rim, and yet 2) Poor denticles, 3) Very poor strike, especially around the edge 4) Puffy devices, 5) Zits on the reverse, 6) An odd patina
It is very unlikely to be genuine with all of those features together in one place.
