I have a coin in horrible condition I purchased that I think is gold. Can I get some help identify'n this bugger? It looks like a 20 dollar Liberty gold on the back, same design. But noway it says twenty dollars, all I can make out looks like COMP where the 20 would be. weighs a little over 10 penny weight. Front looks like a 20 dollar liberty as well, I think theres words where the date should be. I'm near positive its gold.

maybe a soak in acetone would reveal more of the designs.
Pure acetone, not mixed. Search this forum for proper use of acetone.
Rest in Peace

Unlikely that it's gold. It looks like a bronze or brass token. What's its diameter?

From what I can tell comparing it to the coinbook which has proper sizes illustrated etc, it fits exactly over the picture of a 20$ liberty. has the same eagle on the back. same liberty gal on the front,It looks like a 20$ liberty front and back but has what look like words where dates and values should be. It also ways a shade over 10 pennyweight. I did the acetone bath and have 2 new pics!! Please help!

This is a 19th century German-made brass (gilt?) play-money token. The legend on reverse reads "COMPOS. SPIEL MÜNZE" or "COMPOS. SPIEL MARKE." Similar example on this site:

Rule #1 when you suspect something may be a gold coin- if it is corroded, it is definitely not gold. However, copper-based alloys such as brass will most definitely corrode and 10dwt is roughly half the weight of a genuine Double Eagle.
