Hi All ...

I recently began collecting BU ASEs. Eventually, I'm hoping to have all 27. I've bought a few on ebay, a couple form LCS and some from Provident Metals. I like the Provident avenue because I can buy them in real time (spot prices) plus their premium which I believe is fair.

A couple of weeks ago, they finally had a few coins in stock that I needed - specifically a 2005 and 2006. I received them this last weekend. When I opened the package I was amazed at what they had sent. I ordered the coins BU (lowest cost) and they sent me both coins in slabs - one a NGC First Strike Gem Uncirculated and the other a PCGS Gem BU. Another coin I ordered was a 2011 - it came in the ordinary plastic fold.

My question - is this odd? Did they make a mistake or has this happened to anyone else. I've looked at other coins with the same grades and they are way more expensive than what I paid for them ($35 and change). Like I said, I'm new at this so I just found it curious - especially because I've never received a shipment that was "more than I expected." Look forward to your insight...

Mark

Unless you ordered that by accident they made a mistake. Its always possible they ran out of what you ordered and substituted that instead but only they would know if thats the c ASE

Hi Mark, I'm guessing it probably wasn't a mistake. If I'm reading your post correctly, they are both both in Gem slabs, meaning they didn't grade high enough to be a 69 or 70. Maybe Provident bought these from an individual and sold these as BU eagles rather than making a new category for Gem slabs. My local coin shop sells Gem slab eagles for $1 more than raw ones. The 69's usually sell about $5-$10 more than that depending on the year.

I'm thinking SDCrow hit the "nail right, square on the head". Most price list only grade the 69 and 70s significantly higher than the common commercial UNCs. The folks that send them in for grading take a chance and send their best but sometimes miss on their internal grading. I've picked up a lot of MS 63-65, slabbed ASEs for just a a few dollars over spot.
