I'm very hesitantly identifying this coin as an India-Princely States Baroda 2 Annas Y# 33a VS1952 (1895).

It's silver, weighs 1.42g and is the same diameter as a Geo V UK silver 3d (about 16mm according to KM).

Is this ID correct, please ?

What does VS stand for

It has some unsightly black marks on the obverse, dabbing acetone had no effect, should I try something else (what?).

Yes. Here's the NGC database page.

The Vikrama Samvat calendar. Year 1 in this calendar was in 56 BC; simply subtract 57 from the VS date to convert to AD date.

Reckon it's tarnish, then. Tarnish remover such as coin dip will get rid of it, but will leave you with a cleaned coin. I'd suggest leaving it alone.

Sap,
Thanks very much.

Once I had identified the issuer - by looking through all the pictures in the K&M catalogue, I had to guess which numeral system was used.

K&M list several numeral systems used in India.

Is there a list somewhere stating the numeral system used for each state, please ?

Not to my knowledge, but it's more or less geographically-based; states around the Gujarat peninsula all use the much the same "Gujarati" numerals, for example. So if you're looking for a coin and spot coins from a certain state with the same numerals as yours, you could in theory use the map in front of the Krause listing to try to find neighbouring states. But it's still probably quicker to keep trying to picture-match at random through the states.
