Hi all,

Im no longer a collector, I sold out back when the Hunt Brothers had silver selling at 25x face value, so its been awhile.

I got a dime out of a vending machine tonight that at first I thought was silver. It looks exactly like a dime you would have had in your pocket back in the early 60s, except it is a 2007s.

It looks to be the proper thickness and diameter, I think its slightly underweight, but I might be imagining that.

It is not a proof. It has zero copper on the edge.

Were there any silver coins minted that wee not proofs?

Could it be plated, and if so why?

Is it worth keeping?

Im not aware of any 2007 S silvers that werent proofs.

Its entirely possible it is a plated dime, theres a few companies now that plate coins in silver gold platinum ect and sell for big market ups.

As far as extra value if its plated it doesn't really have any, theres not enough extra metal to make a difference.

If you like it and it gets you back into collecting I would keep it though

im not sure but I thought all the s mint marks were now proofs only or am I wrong.
which means it is a proof albeit probably an ugly proof
there are people busting up proof sets left and right
and if they cant get the money out of it they probably spend it.
dont quote me on this I might be completely wrong just my opinion.

to CCF. If it has an S mint mark then it is probably a circulated proof. A photo would help us help you.

Any tips on the proper way to photograph a coin?

This coin looks as if it has been in circulation, it has the wear marks that would be expected on a 5 year old coin.

Next to a 2004 dime it is very easy to see that the finish is not the same, instead of a bright nickle finish, this is a dull silver finish.

If plated, what metal would have been used?

If it's an S Mint, it is a Proof coin that got put into change somewhere. And they did make both Silver and Clad Dimes in 2007. 1,702,116 Clad versions and 875,050 of the Silver versions. Yours sounds like the Silver one. If the edges appear to be all Silver, probably the Silver one. Pending on how much damages was done in circulation, the Proof value possibly has gone down a lot.

That dime is worth about $2.00 in melt value. Other than that, it's a dime not a collectable.

Without a picture or weight, it is impossible to determine what you have. Weigh your coin and compare the weight to a known CuNi clad dime, that will tell you if it is a silver proof or just plated post-mint.

Did you consider taking the dime to a coin shop?
