I hope this seller receives more than just a negative feedback for his actions. It was not a case of unknowingly selling a counterfeit.

Meanwhile back to the quiz.
There is another feature of this counterfeit that does not belong on an 1870,and is only found in conjunction with OBV2.
Anybody?

Bust pointing to C top serif? Obv. 1 is rounded above the top serif.

And one obvious problem I hadn't noticed is that the stems of the two lowest leaves of the reverse are MIA.

Not the denticles.
Not the ribbon.
These features could occur on the mythical 1870 OBV2.
Perhaps my question wasn't specific enough.
The answer I am looking for is a feature that can occur on many OBV2s but cannot possibly occur on an 1870.

You got it dialog_gvf,

I guess you posted while I was on the phone.I should look before I click submit.

The "missing stems" punch didn't happen 'til 1872.

After reading threads like this, it makes me wonder if I'm getting into something too big. Just picking out counterfits could be a whole hobby in itself! I'm really new to all this, but if I end up making a collection that could very well be mostly fakes, I'm debating whether to get out while I'm ahead.

@GaryN Most counterfeits are concentrated in the very rare/valuable varieties such as the one this thread starts with. 1921 5c and 1966 $1 small beads etc. It is generally not worthwhile counterfeiting coins that only sell for $20 - although even with these you still need to be cautious about sellers who overgrade and misattribute :-). If you're not confident in the coin just don't buy it. If you want added peace of mind for a more expensive coin then spend a few more dollars and get a TPG'd one or buy from an established, reputable dealer (there are a few threads already that list recommendations). Counterfeiting is something to be aware of and cautious about but it affects a very very small percentage of the market. And you can always post pictures here and get a second opinion before you buy!
