Note to self - purchase one of those Rennick's Books! I recently purchased a small bulk lot of halfpennies and received a 1944y. penny as a gift. I was about to put it in away, and noticed that the dot (mintmark) looked a little low. I thought I might take a pic to try and verify this. So I took a pic of a high dot and a low dot. To my surprise, the low seemed to have a blunt second "n", as highlighted in the pic. I don't know enough about die fills (or variations for that matter). Can someone tell me if this is a die fll, variation, or something else? pic1 = high dot, pic2 =low dot, different "n", pic3= low dot with a blunt "n" Further info - I have 17 1944y. pennies, 11 have a low dot, and 6 have a high dot.

Many Thanks, Unicorn, up to 7 dot varieties listed. Better pull all those 1944y.'s out again! Interested to find out about the blunt/pointy "n"'s as well.

Not sure about the N in the bottom pic, seems to have a shadow of where it should be. Can't see any variety listed in Renniks regarding the N. Must check some and see .....

On high res it looks like a shadow, but there does not appear to be any damage around that area, I've checked it out under 43x magnification. Not appearent in the pic is that this coin has a light orange brilliance about it. Also, interestingly, on the second pic, the end of the "n" appears more like a blob than a point, but this may just be a coincidence, not sure if they are the same die.

Received in the mail today what I thought was a normal, everyday 1942 y. Penny. I still don't have a normal, everyday 1942y. penny!

Sorry, now I have more questions - Can Verdigris spread from coin to coin if they are in 2x2 holders? Should I give this one a good soaking in Olive Oil? This one is in an adhesive 2x2, I much prefer the staples, as I'm concerned that the glue can somehow react with the surface of the coin, so I think I will take it out, anyway.

The verdigris will spread to other coins as well as grow on this coin. I would not soak this coin. It is a low value coin so I would get a cotton bud and dip it in oil and use that to gently rub the verdigris. Id then dip the whole coin in acetone to remove the oil.
