Very interesting! Do you know what the latin translates to? Assuming it is Latin. The year MDCCVI I thought would be 1706 not 1786. I may be wrong.

1706 was the year of Franklin's birth. Perhaps you recall the elaborate citywide festivities staged in 2006 by our excellent municipal authorities in Philadelphia in honor of the tricentennial of our favorite citizen (not!).

It's a very attractive medallion, presumably designed by Augustin Dupré ?

Correct 1706. his birth year .Thanks Philly. when was this token made? And why " Guive" or Guivre? Not sure how it is spelled. How did the OP ( mmorgan) come up with 1786? Just trying to learn mm.

It's 'cuivre' - the French word for copper.
Was it struck in other metals, too ?

This medal is a product of the Paris Mint, and would have been struck in the late 19th century as indicated by the "pointing hand" privy mark on edge. One year after Franklin had returned to America (having served as Ambassador to France), this medal was struck in France, apparently at the initiative of the engraver Dupré, who had been commissioned by Franklin to produce the Libertas Americana medal and medals authorized by Congress for Revolutionary war heroes. The year 1786 marked Franklin's eightieth birthday.
