andyg- thanks for mentioning the random orientation. That would mean that the edge was applied with a Castaing machine or another similar device since the orientation of the edge is fixed when it is struck by the collar. Planchets are occasionally prone to slippage when they are run through the bar dies which can result in edge letters that are too close or too far apart.

biokemist6: Does that mean it is more likely to be a one off then?

moomoo, been round Derby quite a few times and will search on almost any ground. I try and avoid scrub when possible, its a pain to swing and a pain to dig, but pretty much anything else is good to go, including shallow water
Yes, I have been blessed with a lot of finds over the years and am thinking of setting up a new club to help 'starters'.
If you here of anything drop me a message. If your serious on wanting a detector I would suggest trying the hobby first. Though it is an absolute must for me (if I dont get out at least twice a week I lay on the floor kicking and screaming) it's not for everyone and I have seen a few buy a new machine only to leave it to rot after only a few outings
Have a look at the detector forums, I posted a beach search I was doing on there, would be ideal for your kiddies.

MetDet71: Thanks for the advice. I'll ask around the locals in my area for you. If you set up a club please let my know; as well as me and mine I know a few older and probably younger home schoolers and their families that this kind of club would be of interest to.

It would be a one-off in the sense that every error is a one-off but that does not mean that other examples do not exist, it is just not a reliably repeatable occurrence. As for as rarity or value, I have no clue for a UK coin. The US series of Presidential dollar coins has had some similar edging issues but the only ones that have seen a significant premium are those with missing or doubled edge lettering.
