I'm wondering if anyone can help me; I have 3 1986 £2 coins. sorry if I waffle on a bit at this point... From what I have read on a website ( http://www.coins-of-...o.uk/dec2p.html) .... "As the edge inscriptions are stamped on the edge of blank coins before striking, they can (and do) appear either way up in theoretically equal quantities". This is where I need help on two of my coins the writing is one way and on the third the writing is the other way up BUT on the third coin not only is the writing the other way up from the first two it reads/spelt differently from the first two... 1st two coins: XIII COMMONWEALTH GAMES SCOTLAND 1986 +The third coin: XIII COMMONWEALTHGAMES SCOTLAND 1986 +Can anyone help or offer advice in this matter? Kelly

Curious, have you checked the web for varieties? It is indeed supposed to have the space, but I have found no reference to this. Heres an error undiscovered in circulation: http://www.loomis.co.uk/newsroom/la...ulation.htmlIts certainly odd. You should definitely get in touch with an expert.

Thank you so much for getting back to me BenByfield. Yes I have tried looking everywhere for any information or varieties but keep coming up blank. I would not know where to find an expert either; I've never needed one so that is also something I will have to look into. I'm guessing that it will be a fake and worth nothing but I am curious what it will be worth if it is not a fake.

You might try Coincraft. Opposite the British Museum entrance in Great Russel Street, London. I've been there a couple of times and they have been very helpfull. Good luck, Dave.

Where are you based in the UK moomoo? I know quite a few places you could take that but unsure as to the area you are in. Nice spotting by the way, sifting through my collection now lol.

Hi MetDet72, I'm on the Leicestershire/Derbyshire border, I'd love it if you knew somewhere I could take it to get it looked at! All feedback I'm getting so far is that no one has seen this error before - I only spotted it by chance; I was not looking for an error of any kind so my thinking is that if it is not a fake that it's not a case of never being seen and a one off error more a case of it just not being noticed by anyone. Do let me know if you come across one in your collection though!

I live just off that border too ;) But, unfortunately, I don't know anyone in the local area that would be interested in this - there is a dealers in Nottingham whom I would otherwise recommend, but their interest in decimal errors such as this may well be rather low.

Does anyone know if the edge lettering is applied at the time of striking with a collar die or is it a secondary process done with a Castaing machine(parallel bar dies)?

The lettering can be either way up and starts at random points on the coin, so maybe wrongly, I always assumed it to be a secondary process.

Andyg: I can't believe you live on the same borders; I don't know any other coin collector's! Small world hey, lol.

I am from Nottingham myself. There are a few dealers close to the main ring road that runs through there, but they pay nothing and charge everything. It's probably a good idea to hang onto it for now, if it turns out to be an error having it in BU would be a bonus.

MetDet71: Wow your quite close to me too! I agree; I'll hang onto it and hopefully one day I'll find more out about it. Thanks so much for your help.

Off topic moomoo, but is there any nice farmers you know round your neck of the woods that might let me come and swing 'Eddy' my detector round on their land?

MetDet71: I don't know but I can ask around for you. Do you find much with your 'Eddy'? I was thinking of getting one myself and calling her Betty but I'd have to buy three; it's only me and my two kids and they too are now into collecting coins and when I mentioned in passing a while ago about getting a detector they both said "that sounds fun. Can you get us one each too!" :)
Are there any type of places you prefer? I have lot's of countryside around here.
moomoo :)
