Hi
Take a look at these pictures of this 2001 dime..A lot of the letters have extra metal coming off the ends of the letters...Is this normal for this year..This metal is raised the same height as the letters themselves.

Hey Wert. I know the 2001 dimes are very prone to this. I think I remember something about "flow lines". Don't quote me on this. If you do a search on the site you should come up with other posts on this subject. With that being said...you usually do not see that much metal flowing from the corners of the lettering. I like it.

For Trail Dies...please have a look here. Very informative from some great experts.

DBM...John1
Isn't Die Deterioration usually lower than the letters or numbers themselves...these are actually the same height as the letters...?...Of course, I am by no means an expert.

It's harder to find a perfect example of a coin from this year than it is to find what you've displayed here.

I looked through my stash of 2001 Volunteers (at one point I was trying to sell them for above face value, but gave up) and pretty much all of them had this. I also have a couple 2001 quarters with the same problem. My guess is that this was an early production problem with the new MPPS planchets, and isn't much more than a nuisance (unless you find a really spectacular example).
