I recently found the 1980's penny posted here in a coin roll. I am unable to identify the last digit of the date. The coin weighs 3.06 grams, so I'm guessing it is pre-1983.

Despite comparing the last digit to the numbers 0-9 struck as final digits in other 1980's pennies, I cannot find one that has the form or spacing that would indicate the edges of the last digit on this coin are simply worn away.

Is it an error? Has anyone seen one like this before? Any ideas on how it might have ended up like this?.

I believe that the last number of the date was damaged some way after it left the mint. PMD. We have had a few of these on here . The number is a "1" making the date 1981 IMHO..

Also in 1982 there were copper and Zinc-copper pennies produce, large and small date, 7 different varieties

Keep on searching!

The damage is parallel to the rim. Most likely a coin wrapper damaged it.
