This Seems Like A Serious Flaw In The Ebay Search Function

I just recently bought a Canadian 50 cent silver coin from 1995 with White-tailed Ptarmigans on the reverse. I almost missed the one I eventually bought because the description had "ptarmigans" and I'd used "ptarmigan" (i.e. missing the final "s") as my search word, which failed to pull it up. Fortunately, I did several searches using multiple variables so I found it. Surely most search engines pull up all words when you type a fragment of a word? I would have thought "pta" or "ptar" should have done it, let alone everything but the final "s". Is there some way to toggle between exact match vs word fragments that I am overlooking or does the search engine really suck this badly?

Hmmm... I don't know why it didn't work for you. I remember reading an official ebay manual and it said to put the plural of things that could be plural in your title, like "dollars" instead of "dollar". Then it would pull up results for both.

I tried it out with "autograph lot":

And it came up with that $80,000 listing with autographs in the title...

But you are right, some of the ptarmigan coins only come up when you search for the plural...

I occasionally search using "commonly" misspelled words as I have gotten a few major bargains in the past that way. Someone will list with a misspelled word so they get very few "looks" compared to the listings with the word spelled correctly. I'm really surprised that the plural isn't always found though - that is bizarre.

I went in and, just for fun, tried a few fragments and this time it did pull up longer words, as one would expect. So I guess it just has the odd quirk. Really an unfortunate thing for those sellers affected!
