Hi, my 7yr old and I have started coin collecting together and we would like some advice on what to look for, how to clean them, how to store them and where to find them! He already has many of the fifty cents and one dollars, only one Twenty Cent unfortunately, and we are now collecting a coin from every year of mint, but where do we find all those ones of low mintage? I don't really want to have to buy them online because that takes the fun out of looking. I've read of people noodling but what is that? If I am to buy him some for birthdays etc what toe do I buy? Any advice would be appreciated :) thanks. Edited by rachael_oliver 04/18/2013 06:58 am

to you and your son. CCF is a great family-friendly forum. I thought that being in the welcoming section it would get noticed more, but moved back at your request. Sorry

Hi and to the ccf family. In response to your questions what to look out for pretty much any type of rare dates, variety or error. How to clean them DON'T it severly reduces the value of any coin to a collector. How to store them try 2x2 flips they come in many different sizes and can either be glue or stapled. Where to find all the low mintage coins if it is decimal then you can with some luck find them in change while if it is predecimal you will need to buy them. Noodling is when people go to banks and exchange notes or withdraw money from an account as coins to sort through for any rare dates, varieties or errors and in terms of birthday presents try giving him a little bag of predecimal coins (very cheap to pick up at you local coin store in the bulk penny bin usually low grade but cheap otherwise predecimal silver is significantly more expensive in comparison) if it is decimal then you can try the Royal Australian Mint which sells year uncirculated or proof sets. Here is their link: https://eshop.ramint.gov.au/I hope that helped

Welcome to the forum.
To find the coins your looking for, check your local area for coin clubs and or coin shows, coin shops in your local area.
You can go to the bank and get rolls of coins and search that way, order from the mint,or hunt on line.

I'm sure you'll find plenty of people willing to help with your questions, and a lot of your queries will probably already have been discussed at length from many perspectives. As such, a quick search of the forums will find you a wealth of knowledge. For mine, collecting is a personal experience, and you should collect what appeals to you, rather than get too involved in the "do's and dont's". These start to matter a lot more when you go to sell an item or are wanting to invest, however are much less critical if you're just having fun with it all. Happy collecting!

Welcome to CCF. I hope you both have a great time collecting together. If you take a look at http://www.ramint.gov.au/designs/ram-designs/and then select the denomination on the menu at the left, you can see all of the circulating coins, and mintages to get an idea of what to look for in circulation. If finding/collecting unusual or rare coins in circulation appeals to you both, have a read on the forum about varieties like 1966 wavy 20c 2000 mule $1 2000 incuse 50c

[welcome] to CCF. My son and have been collecting since he was about 6 or so (he is now 13). You will find their interest waxes and wanes but it is some of the best time you will spend together.
We had great times at local coin shows. You will find some dealers who enjoy speaking to kids that age and usually throw something in extra to keep them excited. Hopefully you will be able to find some in your area.

Thanks for all your tips. We have visited a few banks and have found one that are lovely and helpful so we will check back there once a month or so. We also cracked open our 6yr going money tin and found half a dozen different twenties in there, and I am now paying cash for everything, so I think we will eventually finish our collection of low mintage coins. I am yet to find a coin show in the Wollongong area but will keep my eye out. And we will definitely be paying a visit to the Canberra mint to broaden our horizon. Its a nice hobby in todays world and I hope he continues to enjoy it in yars to come! So thanks again and I will get back to you when I have another question :)
