G Day there, I stumbled across this 1998 $1 coin. It must of been put away for a while & now found its way into circulation. Excellent shiny red surface & in a vf/ef grade? My thoughts in this is, it is called Patina? I need to give it a classification name. Not an error, a variety? Cheers on any feedback.

Hi moneybags not sure this is what you are after but there is a fairly wide colour range with the Australian $1 coins.
The two examples in the last pic are about the 2 extremes and there is everything in between. The reddish coins are more attractive and desirable. imo
I believe the colour of your coin is fairly common, but I have no knowledge about the particular year 1998 if there is something different about that one. Cheers darge.

I suspect it would be the copper in the alloy has been toning, hence causing it to look more red. I would also suspect that in recent years, the amount of copper has been slightly reduced, hence causing the coins to look more pale yellow instead of the rich red gold color. This can also be seen in gold alloys.
