I just returned to coin collecting and was placing some of my coins in 2x2's and when I placed a 1934-D Mercury dime in the holder and went to staple it I noticed that the front did not exactly line up with the back ( or vice-versa ). When the reverse image is exactly verticle and the coin is flipped--the obverse image is off by approximately 10-15%. I AM NOT familiar with error coins and as such this question may have been asked before but since I am new--please try to fill me in on this variation. Thanks

That amount of rotation is pretty common in Mercury dimes. Generally it's not of interest unless it's at least 90 degrees out of whack.

You are in possession of a rotated die Mercury dime. And be sure to flatten your staples;)

And Welcome!
