As I said in another post, I am very new to coin collecting and just learned about the idea of error coins. After reading a little about dies and the minting process, I have been picking coins out of change that look a little different.

I found a 1983 Lincoln Penny with a minor marking around the date. At first glance it just looks like a small nick or dent near the 8. And I tend to believe it is just minor damage from after its minting. But with closer magnification (which I could not quite replicate with photos), it appears as though part of the 8 broke off and melted... spreading inside the 8 and the 3. I'm not saying that's what I think happened, I'm just describing what it looks like to a novice observer.

Does anyone know if there any known errors of this type, particularly with this year? Opinions about the cause of the abnormality? Thanks.

Good thought to check the reverse... looks completely normal, even under magnification.

Looks like a strike through to me. Have you weighed it? There are known copper errors for this year.
