I was daydreaming today and imagined myself at a garage sale, looking through a box marked "old coins." I see few Barber dimes, and notice an 1894. I hold my breath as I turn it over, and... there it is. THE "S" MINTMARK. I am able to retain my composure as I ask the seller how much he wants for it. He takes a brief glance, and mutters, "Well, it's pretty old, how about $25?" For some reason, I decide that I want to dicker with him, in spite of the incredible circumstances. I offer him $20, and he says, "Sure. Have a nice day." I take the 1894-S, pay him, and saunter down the driveway to my car, like nothing special has happened. It's not till I get home that I start screaming happy things. Well, that didn't happen, but I am wondering if you have ever had a similar circumstance where you unexpectedly found a remarkable coin and were able to keep it?

I deal alot with Bullion dealers who let me sort their buys before the send them out to melt them. My three best buys: 1916D Walking Liberty half in MS; 1903S Barber dime in AU; 1945P Merc with full split bands. And maybe the coin I bought yesterday; an 1847 Austrian Thaler for $18 in EF. I can't find any comps for it.

Yup. And both on ebay, oddly enough. One coin is only the second known with that mint mark and I later swapped it with another collector for another rarity, for which I'd have had to pay at least five times what I did for the original coin. The other was this: Yeah, a bit beat up. But a very difficult coin to find with a reasonable portrait. I put in a bid for what I could afford which was in the several hundreds and after a week I found .. I was the only bidder and I got it for the opening price. Very pleased! I still get the same sort of daydreams as jpsned though. There are always more rarities out there and it's fun to imagine finding them for a bargain price!

Mine involves a time machine and a visit to the 17th century to pick up coins before time and clipping have taken their toll!
And if anyone happens to have a time machine ... please pm me!

I've told this on this forum before. And it's a true story. At a coin show I was wandering around like I usually do early as dealers are just setting up. One dealer had just put a box of Nickels on his table. I looked and they were all Indian Head, Buffalo, Nickels. All looked in fantastic shape so I asked how much. This dealer was busy shooting the breeze with someone he knew so he gave me a thanks for interupting look. But he blurted out 3 for $1. The first one I picked up was a 3 legged, 37D and in fantastic shape. Again I tried to say how much. Again, he looked at me as if I should take a walk. I picked up that one and several others and handed him $5 for 20 of them. He grabbed the $5 and continued talking to his friend. One last time I started to tell him buy he now completely ignored me.
