Ran across this on E-bay. This Looks really cool if your looking for old mintage info from the late 1700's to 1830's on US coins.

Very interesting. Doesn't look like a newspaper though-- looks like a section of pages removed from a book-- binding marks, page size...

More info, looks like some volumes are free to read online: http://archive.org/details/hazardsunitedsta05slsn

I'm browsing it right now just for grins. Came across this fascinating entry from Aug 1841:
1839-Newspaper-W/-Mint-Stats.

1839-Newspaper-W/-Mint-Stats.

Which seems to be referencing the Unity States coin, although the 1783 copper Washington coin shown on PCGS CoinFacts reads "Unity States" rather than "United States". Or does another version really exist? Interesting!

And if you're interested in reading the contents of the pages in the ebay listing, it starts on p. 193 of this Google Books link: http://books.google.com/books?id=rm...1839&f=false

The pages listing coin mintage data from 1793 through 1838 start on p. 196, with a good chart!

Interesting that the modesty of George Washington provoked him to remove coins with his likeness from circulation. If he knew how many images his face was on for everything from currency to TV commercials, his wooden teeth would fall out.

Washington never saw that coin, it was produced around 1820 in England as were several other "1783" dated Washington pieces. So at the time that 1841 article was written the token was only about 20 years old.

LOL!

1841: Don't believe everything you read in the United States Commercial & Statistical Register.

::

2013: Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

Well, at least we can accurately trace our propensity for inaccurate reporting

Good point... 2013 is a banner year for news. Last week, I heard that it's no longer important to report the news correctly, it's more important to be the first with the news.
