What would you grade these two Morgans I just bought? The left one has some gunk on the back that may come off with acetone, the other a rim ding.

I went to About.com and read about grading these. I got VF for the left, XF for the right. Is that about right?

Yes, bad pics a little too dark to see what is going on, if the right one has some luster I would say the front may be AU considering the hair details but the reverse is XF and it has a ding. I would net it down to XF40. It has some dirt and gunk, don't really consider that an issue since these were circulated. I could soak it and get it off. I think I will soak the one on the left and get that unsightly gunk of the reverse.

I think EF/AU details, stained for the left and AU details, rim damage for the right. Looks like a good price for the pair.

Yes, it looks like they are selling one by the title doesn't it? I am deciding which I will keep, probably the left and soak it in acetone to get rid of that reverse gunk and re-sell the right one.

Actually the reverses did not coincide in the picture and the coins were swapped. The one on the left has the rim ding and the one on the right has the gunk on the reverse that looks like will come off with acetone. What would you grade this coin?

Doubt the carbon spots will come off with acetone. Probably won't come off with dip either.

Is that what those black spots are? I thought it was gunk. If you don't think it will come off best to leave it alone. It has some surface dirt but some purist I know like that. I am going to keep one and sell of the other. Haven't decided which one to keep. Neither the rim ding nor the spots bother me, they are circulated coins.
