Very nice looking piece that looks to be high AU at least. I can't see any rubs in the images and the luster is excellent. I would venture a MS63 if no luster breaks are present.

Damage to the fields comes easily with these. I would need to examine it with a loupe, but from the pictures, it looks like a superior coin to me!

I have been trying to track down for some time, a Half Eagle of this design any date, but I have yet to find a really clean coin here in Australia.

Looks like they rare, with completely clean fields.

I was thinking AU also but have to admit these inverse coins are very difficult for me to grade, especially when trying to do so by pictures (even though I am not much better when I see them in person)

I think it could grade AU-58.

I don't think this makes ms due toward on the eagles shoulder and on the bonnet. AU58 IMO.

I have a 1908 with the same thing on the reverse. It's graded ms64 by pcgs. I think clean fields and luster carry these coins

Thank you all for your thoughts and opinions.
Would this coin be worth certifying? I don't mind saying that I paid $275. Considering how you all are grading, would the cost of grading be worth it?

That is again folks!

It might be. Depends on your goal and funds availability. If you plan to sell it, think it will grade mint state, and have the money on-hand then it's worth grading.

You bought it for a fair price. Were it to grade MS62 at a top TPG then you have a coin with a market value of $500.

Be aware that Indian Head gold is often rejected during TPG for minor problems.
