Maybe I'm off base here, but to me, this 1917-D Walker looks like it should get a Fine grade, not VF. Am I missing something? Is the strike that poor on this one? I see the collar, but where's lady liberty's left breast? Also, in cert lookup from NGC, the reverse pic is fuzzy. (Is that normal?)

One thing to note, arkmanxx:

Halves from 1916 to 1921 are graded differently than from 1923 onwards due to a modification in the design.
Not my area and I never could tell the difference.
We must both wait for a Walker Wizard to explain!

Rest in Peace

Looks pretty nice to me! The earlier years are generally weakly struck.

To my eye, this coin comes close to not even making 'fine' grade. I would nevertheless grade it as F12.
Some of the main design features have been worn flat.

Particularly with Liberty Walking halves, this can become a dominating feature of wear. An obvious diameter of wear appears on both sides of the coin.

So, with the coin being overgraded, what would be the best scenario in the following situation?

If someone purchased the coin and paid a price close to what a F12 in that date would bring - is there a way to resubmit the coin to NGC, stating that it is overgraded and requesting some kind of compensation for the misgrade? I'm not sure how something like that would work (if its possible)

Would there be a way to profit from overgraded slabbed coins such as these?

(btw, I don't like the look of the coin here, so I wouldn't bother to buy it - but I pose the question just for my knowledge)

Yes, there's a Grade Review process in place, with allowance for compensation vs. market price for a coin determined to be overgraded. Quite frankly, I don't see the coin being discussed here as too terrible, by comparison to others of similar grade in slabs. Maybe 5 points at worst.

Maybe I'm looking to the wrong resources for photograding. Is the David Lawrence book online about Walkers: http://blog.davidlawrence.com/index...nical-grade/

the right thing to look at for proper grading? I have the ANA grading standards book, but the pictures are pretty hard to make anything out and the description is a bit confusing to me. I'm most interested in the difference between very good, fine and very fine (I'm missing most early date walkers and I think anything with a higher grade than VF would exceed my pocketbook)

Looking at PCGS photograde, the coin falls between VF20-25.

Should I be using another resource to learn about grading?

The coin is VF but with those two contact marks by the "T" in "Liberty" that's just to noticeable to get a 25 so I would grade it VF-20.
